Malaria - an opportunity to contain this disease

During our stay at Kyazanga over January, 2010 we experienced first hand the dreadful onslaught of Malaria. Three of the teenagers and one adult we stayed with went down with malaria. The disease reduced these children to zombies with high fevers, devoid of all energy and appetite over a 5 - 7 day period. Medication slowly revives them but it takes a huge toll on resources and places real pressure on the surrounding community. We put before you a proposal to raise funds to purchase mosquito nets for the school so that full time boarders can get protection from mosquitos especially at night. See the following photos of the dormitories at Kyazanga primary School - there are no mosquito nets!!! We took 12 double high quality mosquito nets purchased in Tauranga at $40 each and these were given to families in extreme need. We will investigate the cost of nets in Uganda to see if we can save on freight costs. Here are a few photos related to the problem. Sharron is caring for a victim and Moreen one of the orphan girls has just been infected - observe the malaria "look"!!!
